Paralign® Roll Alignment
Paralign® is a new roll alignment tool that steps completely away from the traditional methods of doing roll alignment with optical tooling. Using gyroscopes to create a stable platform, rolls are measured for their orientation in space, and then upon selection of a reference roll, the relative misalignment between all measured rolls is displayed. All measurements are sent directly to a computer via bluetooth connection, so there is no human interface, and the Paralign® is not affected by the local mill conditions (heat etc.).
There is no line of sight required, only access to a minimum of 20 degrees of the roll surface - and this can be any portion of the roll. One sweep gives both the vertical and horizontal alignment components. Data acquisition is as fast as the unit can be swept on the face of the roll, and no setup is required for the measurements of the next roll.
If there are rolls at either end of the machine, high up or in the basement, there is no additional setup or moving of equipment, and all measurements can be related to the same reference roll in the machine (as long as it doesn’t move for the duration of the measurements.) All accessible rolls in the machine can now be easily measured and referenced to any other measured roll.
Given good conditions and access, it is possible to measure up to 15 rolls in one hour - in both the vertical and the horizontal, and have a clear graphical depiction of the results instantaneously. This technology now allows for a complete survey of a machine in a relatively short period of time, no need to wait for that major shutdown. Paralign® can be used as a powerful source of planning information for roll alignment selection for the shutdown. This will lead to informed decisions for corrective measures, as well as a better understanding of machine and web dynamics, and also potential clothing life expectancies, due to roll alignment. The clear graphical report in the form of a jpeg file, allows for the combined production and maintenance department analysis of the data.
